So when I got my start number, I was fully convinced that this will get a great race. All the training sessions the last weeks were done with a better performance than expected and even though I had to change the trainings to the full course that was the half marathon course in the city and the other 21 km to Mondello. I made every step of the marathon already three times at least and almost knew every pebble on the way. Also the last training session was ok, though I didn't tested my full speed mode and I was very excited for the race, it should get sunny, not too warm and in good company.
I took a tea and coffee for breakfast but my body almost refused to run on this morning, maybe it is just excitement and from the night I couldn't almost sleep. So I have put my running clothes on and went to search for a bus. But the main street della Libertá was already closed for traffic and I walked down because there was plenty of time left. Another runner approached and we continued jogging with a little chat and separated at the stadium where I took my last chance to pee. The queue was quite long and I have finished only 3 minutes before the start, so I had to hurry to get a decent starting position, but I was behind the good ones and it took me 200 meters to get to my position. So far OK, I knew the start and did the city part many times, so I knew it will go up for the first 8 km. I found a guy that was good in speed and hold tight to him until the Parliament building where we could race through, one of the few high-lights of the run. On the way down I maintained the speed and the reduced performance gave me the opportunity to smile at all the competitors that were running up. But already at kilometer 10 I ran into a wall, I was always in front of the 1:30 – half marathon pace maker, but this was not the day to beat half- and full marathon records and at kilometer 12 or so they overtook and I tried to maintain a decent speed at 4.30 min/km. Of course estimated as I don't run on a watch. When we came down and left the urban area I had to push many times when competitors closed up to me but only for a few hundred meters, somehow I felt, that I can't hold on for a full marathon but the record is still doable if I regain force on the second half. At the end of the half marathon track, I felt strong pain in the gut but not as in Hvar I cried but didn't stop. My competitors also cried but stopped to laugh when they saw me go on bended and pressing the region where my cecum must lye. After passing the start for entering the second half, I could drink 2 bottles of water what helped for the pain and I tried to regain speed, but my body hold me from running. Even the remainder of the half-marathon runners that were ten kilometers behind were not so easy to take and I was overtaken almost every 500 meters by someone. I tried not to give up and ran downhill to Mondello, but my legs hardly moved. I tried to give a smile when I noticed a photo-camera but fell back to a suffering face shortly after. At kilometer 35 I looked for a water bottle but only sweet drinks came in to my sight so I rejected and went on. But here the uphill part was too much and my arms and neck were hurting so much that in tears I stopped running and walked on, probably the speed difference was not so different but it broke my morale totally. I let overtake some nice girls without even trying to step up, and only at the end of the 3 km uphill part I could rego into a trot and when a couple arrived I had at least some meters running with a girl, because the guy walked up for 50 meters or so, but on the park of the villa, where holes and stones were on the second turn now really dangerous I broke in and walked again back to the water station at the boa turn. This gave me then some what energy to go on jogging the last kilometer and I had no idea what bad time I was approaching, so when we entered the stadium and I didn't even cared no more that some 60 year old were taking me at the last meters, I saw the clock at 3:58 and I not even had to sprint to the finish line this time. The clock said my time was better than in Panamá but I suffered a lot more and I this doesn't reflect at all what I am capable of and what my training times were announcing. I look forward to retake training beginning of next year to run again home in the Balkans.
